The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is a Paleo elimination diet. I don’t mean diet as in lose weight but diet as in what you eat is your diet. Like the Paleo diet, the AIP does not include grains, dairy, legumes or refined sugars, oils or food additives. The AIP goes further eliminating nightshades, eggs, nuts and seeds, alcohol and NSAIDS. These foods are not gone forever but are slowly reintroduced as tolerated by you. The focus of the AIP is to improve immune system regulation through gut health and nutrient density. Just as important as diet is managing stress, getting enough sleep, and being active – without pushing yourself too far.
There is a ton of information out there so I’m not going to try to replicate it all here. Instead I recommend Dr. Sarah Ballantyne’s book The Paleo Approach for an in depth scientific explanation of how and why the AIP works. You can also visit her website at http://www.thepaleomom.com. I also highly recommend http://www.autoimmune-paleo.com by Angie Alt and Mickey Trescott and Phoenix Helix at http://www.phoenixhelix.com by Eileen Laird for all the why, how and when.
Like so many others I have found real significant improvement in my Crohn’s symptoms by following the AIP. I wouldn’t have believed the difference it has made in my life, maybe it can make a difference in yours too.
